A fixture in the Chicago, IL, construction industry, Marc Morale owns Hamilton Construction, which specializes in water mains and sewer lines. Outside his career, Marc Morale devotes himself to scuba diving, particularly by introducing new people to his passion. A member of the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI), he is a qualified divemaster.
In addition to organizing dives, divemasters identify safety hazards, coordinate transportation to and from sites, and check divers as they enter and exit. Divemasters may also support instructors and bring uncertified divers up to speed. Becoming a divemaster requires around a 50-hour commitment. Participants must be 18 or older and medically approved, possess 40 recorded dives and rescue experience and have first aid and CPR certification within 24 months. The academic portion of divemaster certification covers many topics, ranging from site mapping and deep diving to safety procedures and handling risk. There are three ways to begin, including PADI’s eight online learning modules that offer self-paced instruction. (Participants can also access another resource, the Divemaster Manual, during and after the course.) Another method lets you review the manual and the accompanying Divemaster Video before the course. The final option is Dive Theory Online, which describes the physics of diving and concepts of physiology. Completing Dive Theory counts for half of the final certification exam.
